Spicy Hamburger Somen Recipe
This cold and spicy somen noddle recipe is a refreshing and easy meal to make on a hot, summer day. Generally, somen is dipped in a soy sauce based flavor, but in this recipe, I used hot paste to create a cold, but spicy dish. The somen is topped with spicy hamburger to create a unique flavor that is perfect for summer, but can be enjoyed anytime of the year.
Earlier this year, I introduced the traditional way to make Japanese cold somen at home. Somen is often made at home in Japan, sometimes as much as once per week! I created this different arrangement for some additional variety. While the original recipe has multiple variations including cucumbers, green onions, wasabi, and ginger, I wanted even more variety! For this recipe, I used hot pepper paste as shown in the picture below. Other types of hot pepper paste can also be used. I found this paste at a local Asian supermarket and also used it in my Sundubu Jjigae recipe.
This is the hot pepper paste that I used for this recipe.
Tips for Making Spicy Hamburger Somen
- I made this recipe to be quite spicy. If it is too spicy for you, add less of the hot pepper paste to the sauce. Conversely, if you prefer even more spice, you can add more of the hot pepper paste.
- Please ensure that you mix the meat and the noodles well before eating to disperse the sauce evenly throughout the meal.
- I recommend adding a raw egg on top of the minced hamburger if you can safely do so in your country. The raw egg will make it easier to mix the hamburger with the noodles.
- Somen is really easy and great for a hot summer because it is a cold meal. If you get tired of having the same flavor of somen, I recommend trying this recipe. It is a cold dish, but also spicy, creating a unique flavor.
- I served this with somen, but you can also serve this on top of rice or even use a different type of pasta if desired.
Spicy Hamburger Somen Recipe
Ingredients
Somen Spicy Sauce
- 50 mL water
- 1 tbsp cooking alcohol
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 2 tbsp hot pepper paste
- 1.5 tbsp miso paste
Cooking Ingredients
- 1/2 cucumber
- 1 tbsp sesame oil
- 1 tsp grated garlic
- 200 grams minced meat (~1/2 lb)
- 200 grams somen (~1/2 lb)
Instructions
Sauce and Ingredient Preparation
- Slice the half cucumber into thinly sliced pieces
- Add the water, cooking alcohol, sugar, hot pepper paste, and miso paste into a mixing cup and mix well
Bringing it Together
- Add 1 tbsp of sesame oil into a frying pan and begin heating the pan
- Add the minced meat and grated garlic into the pan and cook on medium heat until the meat is browned
- Add the spicy sauce into the pan and simmer until the water content is low
- Meanwhile, boil water for somen
- Once the water is boiling, add the somen and cook according to the package instructions (boil for 2-3 minutes)
- Strain the noodles, cool with a cold water rinse, plate, and add the cucumbers and spicy hamburger mix on top
